Acerca de Ricardo Hambra
Mis estudios musicales así como mi experiencia musical como músico, percusionista y cantante, además de productor, me han llevado hacia distintos puntos alrededor del mundo. Poniéndome en contacto con una variedad rica de culturas e influencias musicales.

He estado estudiando e investigando sobre música relaciones entre músicas étnica y moderna, por más de 20 años, a través de viajes por el mundo y aprendiendo tanto de maestros, así como de la gente común de pueblo, artistas locales que viven en la cotidianidad de sus culturas.

Como docente, he trabajado como director del depto. de percusión étnica de la escuela Neo percusión en Madrid, España, y actualmente en la escuela músicas del mundo (world music study center en los angeles) estoy de paso por buenos aires trabajando en espectáculos y dando cursos.

Tambien acabo de editar a traves de Advance music, Alemania, un metodo completo de aprendizaje para set de Tabla de la India llamado TABLA PARA TODOS, TABLA FOR ALL, escrito en español e ingles.

Hello friends, I'm thrilled that my band PERCUTI is again moving forward by recording new tracks for the next CD release 'FULL FORCE", here are some details:

Fanga Remix, based in poly-rhythmic cycle called 'Fanga', includes African Djembe, Mideastern Darbukas and small percussion shakers, triangle, etc. Plus Sax, Keyboards, Bass and Digital programming.

Review of Magnolia Memoir's music, by Jonathan Widran – Jazzologist, 3/10

In line with my recent post on emerging singer Ariana Savalas, I had the great privilege to discover this past year an incredible and innovative, high energy Los Angeles-based jazz ensemble that I believe will soon become a nationally recognized artist.
In the bio I wrote after seeing Magnolia Memoir make their local debut last June at Largo at the Coronet Theatre, I said: “They opened the door to a realm that lead singer and songwriter Mela Lee playfully dubs ‘jazz for a new generation, jazz in an abandoned warehouse with whatever we could find..’

Fashioning a vibe that’s traditional yet contemporary, brimming with youthful pop and bits of edgy soul, coolly structured yet vibrant and experimental, the ensemble—featuring Alexander Burke (piano, vibes, organ) and Gordon Bash (upright and electric bass)– joins Lee for a journey to a sacred but gritty joint, let’s say an old speakeasy, where Billie Holiday meets Tom Waits at 3 a.m., conversation flows, the lights die down and only the coolest cats are still hanging out.”

Beyond those influences, beyond the heartbreak, there’s a grace, a sweetness, an optimistic spirit in Mela’s songs and her voice that is not haunted but represents the deep joy after the mourning is over. Nine months after that show, I was excited to see Magnolia Memoir receive a month long Tuesday night residency at Molly Malone’s Irish Pub on Fairfax in March.
MM is an unusual fit for the small stage at a club that generally hosts rising pop-rock singer-songwriters, but in their March 23 set, they rocked and seduced just as they did at the several hundred seat venue last June.

The group has evolved a bit, with core members Lee, Burke and Bash joined by Toby Karlin (sax, flute), Aron Forbes (guitar), Matt Lucich (drums) and special guest Ricardo Hambra (World percussion set: djembe, latin congas, bongoes & timbales, cajon, dumbek and tablas, small percs).

The new “cats” solidly complemented the sizzling core vibe forged by the three mainstays. On a mix of sassy charmers (“Pretty Kitty”), raucous jazz rockers (“Unexpected Bliss”) and even a wink to Brit soul (“Crying Shame”),
Lee showed her vocal dynamics which ease effortlessly from powerhouse to whispery elegance. She’s got the sly, sensual innocence of Billie and the playful jazziness of Ella, with lovely touches of Ani Di Franco (my friend Melina made this sharp comparison midway through the 40 minute set).

Burke is a whirlwind, jumping from the main keyboard to vibes to Rhodes, while Bash jump jived like mad on the big bandy rock jazz of “Unexpected Bliss,” literally jumping onto the upright bass and playing it while perched near the neck!

As impressive as Magnolia Memoir’s self titled debut was, I am expecting big things from their upcoming sophomore release based on the handful of songs they performed from it, including “Get Lost,” “The Wait” and “Crying Shame.” I also enjoyed a colorful version of “Doorbell” by The White Stripes. I’ll use a Melina-ism to sum up my thoughts as I watch the brilliant Magnolia Memoir evolve: “Many shades of amazing!”

The Floor - improv for Musicians and Dancers at King King Hollywood, CA February 2010

On Feb. 15th another beautiful night at The Floor, a unique event in Los Angeles scene. A place packed with an eclectic range of great musicians, dancers and enthusiasts, last Monday was honored with the presence of the one and only, the incomparable Sting!

I was able to introduce myself to him, and he kindly said 'I like what you guys are doing tonight'... a nice, humble Sting getting around, dancing and having fun, while we were busy making the best possible music and athmosphere for everyone to enjoy.

A memorable night without a doubt!

Another exciting night for all music and dance lovers!
The Floor improv night kindly invited us for the opening of their 17th. venue, presenting our Indian music duo with Mike on Sitar and myself on Ragas vocal chant and Tabla set. We're going to be performing at the beginning of the show, starting around 10pm. Hello friends, here is a video from a Cable TV program I've participated a couple years ago in Los Angeles, CA. It's called Heart to Heart, hosted by Lorelai Kude.
It was a half hour show with an interview about Ethnic Fusion Music, that also included different segments with music. This one went at the beginning of the program, and it's a World Percussion set solo performance, showing some of the instruments of my set and their techniques. Hope you enjoy it :)

Here we go to the House of Blues on Tuesday September 29th...it will be a party at the Lounge section of this world famous place, yay!
And for this event I've put together NAMA - Ethnic Fusion ChillOut India Sound, featuring Sitar and Tabla set & Raga Chanting...my friend Mike Amundson is a local Sitar player, with good sound and nice chops...while myself Rik Hambra will sit with the Tabla set and put some Ragas Chanting on the air for the people to enjoy :)

The host of this event is the one and only DJ Garth Trinidad (KCRW 89.9 fm), a great spinner who will get you dancing and tapping for the entire night =D

PERCUTI Rhythm Ensemble is an Ethnic Fusion - World Percussion and Chants Ensemble, founded by World Singer & Percussionist Rik Hambra, with an exotic blend of sounds, rhythms and melodies. The Ensemble is comprised of world-class artists with international experience.

PERCUTI Rhythm Ensemble is Ethnic Fusion music that combines the ancient world cultures, like

Also, an African polyrhythmic cycle called Fanga, orchestrated with African percussion instruments and digital background sounds, etc.
